Artist Focus: Liam Matthew Dye

Western art portraits are more than just representations, they are visual stories that capture the essence of their subjects. A truly compelling portrait connects the viewer to the history, culture and spirit of the West, where every brushstroke, from the texture of clothing to the depth in a subject’s eyes, tells a story of resilience and survival.

Liam Matthew Dye invites viewers to have a personal experience with each painting, allowing them to connect with the artwork in a way that feels unique and meaningful to them.

“Generally, I’m not hyper focused on capturing likeness and more of the essence of the figure or subject,” he says. “I was inspired to paint Maynard Dixon’s portrait because I think his life tells a story. I painted it in grisaille with thick layers of impasto so the viewer would feel like they were stepping into a vintage photograph from the era.” —
